Cello Strings

Cello Strings:

Various manufacturers of cello strings have specifications such as strong/ forte or soft/ mellow. This does not necessarily mean that the cello strings sound louder or softer. Rather, this is a description of the string gauge, which increases with the diameter of the cello strings. This is more an expression for the string tension.

A cello string with a forte/strong gauge has a higher tension than a string with a medium or soft gauge. A forte string can sound softer than a soft string because a thicker string cannot divide into its overtones in the same way as a thinner one.

We offer cello strings from all well-known manufacturers:
PIRASTRO, THOMASTIK INFELD, LARSEN, JARGAR, PRIM, PIATTI, CORELLI, D'ADDARIO etc.

Basically, cello strings can be divided into 3 different categories, depending on the core material from which they are made.

1. the core of the cello string is made of gut:

The differences are whether it is a pure non-wound or a wound gut string.
Pure gut strings are still regularly used today in original performance practice.
Wound cello gut strings are wound with various metals: Aluminium, silver and (silver-plated) copper.
Wound cello gut strings have many fans, not least because of their beautiful and modulable timbre.

Renowned manufacturers of gut cello strings are, for example:

PIRASTRO with the brands GOLD, EUDOXA, OLIV, PASSIONE and CHORDA.
SAVAREZ can be found among the pure (gut) cello strings under the label CHD.
SAVAREZ is also the manufacturer of the Corelli gut strings for cello, which you will find under the category Corelli.

2. the core of the cello strings is made of synthetic material:

The type and material of the string core are often the result of many years of development work by cello string manufacturers.
A synthetic core can be solid or constructed more like a rope.
In order to allow different tonal variations of cello strings, a wide variety of synthetic materials are used.
The synthetic core of cello strings is always wound, and the materials are similar to those used for gut strings: Aluminium, silver and in addition chrome steel and various alloys.

Well-known manufacturers of synthetic cello strings are, for example:

The German manufacturer PIRASTRO with the cello strings - brand ARICORE, SYNOXA and OBLIGATO.
The Austrian manufacturer THOMASTIK INFELD with the cello strings - brand DOMINANT

3. the core of the cello strings is made of metal

As with synthetic strings, the core of cello strings is made of different metals and alloys and in different ways, e.g. as a solid or rope core. The metals used for winding cello strings are similar to those used for synthetic core strings.

Well-known manufacturers of cello strings with steel cores are, for example:

The Danish manufacturer LARSEN with the LARSEN STANDARD, MAGNACORE, MAGNACORE ARIOSO, IL CANNONE and AURORA.
PIRASTRO with the cello string brands CHROMCOR; PERMANENT, PERPETUAL, FLEXOCOR, EVAH PIRAZZI, EVAH PIRAZZI GOLD,
THOMASTIK INFELD with the cello string brands SUPERFLEXIBLE, PRÄZISION, VERSUM, BELCANTO and SPIROCORE
The Swedish cello string manufacturer PRIM with the homonymous brand name
The Danish manufacturer JARGAR with the brand JARGAR CLASSIC, SPECIAL and SUPERRIOR
The American manufacturer D'ADDARIO with the string brand HELICORE and KAPLAN
The German cello string manufacturer WEIDLER with the brand NÜRNBERGER KÜNSTLERSAITE

In our online shop you will find all the strings listed above, which can also be combined in many ways. You can often compensate for a "weak" sounding cello string on your instrument with a clever selection of alternative strings. Please feel free to take advantage of our advisory service in this regard. You should provide us with the following details:

1. size of cello, e.g. 4/4 or 3/4 cello
2. the cello strings you are currently using
3. deficits in sound, response, balance, etc.
4. what have you already tried and when on the setup of the cello (bridge/ soundpost etc.)?
5. has the problem existed for a long time or did it suddenly appear?
